US college scholarship for Indian classical music and dance students

India is the root of many kinds of music and dance forms. Sangeeta Bharati is an effort to nourish the roots by practicing, performing, promoting Indian classical music and dance, and uniting practitioners and art lovers (rasikas). To encourage students to continue practicing music and dance throughout their college life, Sangeeta Bharati will award college scholarships to eligible students.

Understanding the Sangeeta Bharati scholarship process

SB Scholarship
  • The scholarship is offered for those who have completed the Junior or Senior Shastreeya Sangeeta, Talavadya, or Nrutya examinations conducted by Sangeeta Bharati America with a minimum grade of B.
  • Completing the Orientation to Hindu Studies course from the Hindu University of America (HUA).
  • Students are required to enroll in an accredited college or university in the United States.
  • Scores in the music/dance exam, the quality of essays and other responses, and the overall music/dance profile of the applicant are the criteria for scholarship selection.
  • The designated committee will award available scholarships in a given year to applicants based on the selection criteria. The committee's decision is final and cannot be challenged.
  • Scholarships will be sent to the bursar office, treasurer office, or similar administrator in a given college after receiving the student ID, receiver address, and other information from the selected students.
  • If students have to reapply, they are required to follow the same process each year, regardless of their previous selection.
  • Immediate family members of the Sangeeta Bharati board or the Sangeeta Bharati scholarship selection committee are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • Students should consent:
  • They will provide proof of admission to an accredited college or university in the US (copy of university ID or reference email).
  • Their picture/audio/video and bio to appear on Sangeeta Bharati’s website and its other social media channels.

Timeline

From Sankranti to the Hindu New Year/Chandramana Yugadi: Application submission.

From Sankranti to Vijayadashami: Students should complete the HUA course and submit the certificate.

Announcement of selection: On the day of Vijayadashami, during Dallas Navaratri Sangeeta and Nrutyotsav.

Selected candidates should provide the following details

  1. Should provide the bursar-like contact information of their college.
  2. A photograph with a plain background (similar to a passport photo) to be used on the Sangeeta Bharati website and other social media channels.

Scholarship checks will be mailed to respective colleges/universities soon or as directed by the bursar’s office.

Application Process

Send an email with the below details to scholarships@sangeetabharati.org between Sankranti and Chandramana Yugadi.

  • The subject should be: Scholarship [YEAR]: [First Name] [Last Name] - [Junior/Senior Scholarship]
  • Provide the following details:
  • Date of birth.
  • Full name.
  • Sangeeta Bharati examination registration number.
  • Your introduction in a paragraph.
  • Introduction of your Guru.
  • Provide a video link of any of your public performance. In the case of senior scholarship, you should be the lead performer.
  • Attach the HUA course completion certificate.
  • Using the below points, write an essay in your own words (750-1000 words) and attach it as a PDF document. Any detection of plagiarism/use of AI tools is grounds for automatic disqualification.​
  • Describe your musical or dance journey since completing your examination. How has your relationship with music or dance evolved?
  • Reflect on the significance of music or dance in your life. What role do you envision it playing in your future?
  • Beyond performance, how have you contributed to the music or dance community?
  • Explain how this scholarship will inspire and motivate you to achieve excellence in the music or dance world.

Hindu University of America conducts quarterly courses (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer). Those intended to apply for scholarship should do this course at their earliest possible. More info is at https://www.hua.edu/courses/orientation-to-hindu-studies/

3. Do we have any discount for Sangeeta Bharati students?

4. I have taken the HUA course in the past and received a scholarship. I am also applying for a scholarship this year. Do I need to retake a course?
